Gold was originally discovered in Queensland, Australia back in the mid-1800s, and a gold rush boom soon followed. Thousands of would-be gold prospectors flooded into Queensland and created a bustling new populace and economy. Gold was collected by both large corporate mining operations and individual prospectors and panning teams.
Gold has been found in the Russell and Johnson Rivers, and around Cairns, Mareeba, Atherton, and in many other places in tropical north-eastern Australia. Along with gold, many other precious, semi-precious, and industrial grade metals, minerals, and gemstones are found in the far north.
Queensland gold fields did not produce the quantity or size of nuggets that made fields in Victoria, Western Australia and New South Wales world famous. However, there are records of at least fifteen Queensland nuggets weighing over 100 ounces and quite a considerable number of smaller specimens.
